Bio-Neuro Feedback
Bio-Neuro Feedback (biofeedback) is a mind-body technique that uses real-time feedback about the body's own signals — such as heart rate, muscle tension, or breathing — to help someone learn to influence those responses themselves. At SFCT it is offered as a complementary therapy, alongside — never in place of — medical or psychiatric care.
Quick facts
- What it is
- A technique using sensors and real-time feedback to help someone learn to influence their own bodily responses (such as heart rate or muscle tension).
- Common applications
- Stress, headaches, and general tension management; some applications for chronic pain and blood-pressure-related stress.
- Who may benefit
- Adults working with an SFCT practitioner on a specific stress- or tension-related goal.
- Typical approach
- Sessions using sensors connected to a monitor, with the therapist guiding the person toward recognising and influencing their own physiological responses.
- Related therapies
- Music Therapy
- Evidence / research status
- Effectiveness varies by individual and by use. One device has US FDA clearance specifically for stress-related blood pressure management; other applications are supported mainly by smaller or exploratory studies rather than large, definitive trials.
Overview
Biofeedback works by making an ordinarily invisible bodily process — like muscle tension or heart rate — visible in real time, usually through a sensor connected to a monitor. With practice, some people learn to consciously influence that process, in the same way you might learn a new physical skill. It has been used to help with stress, tension-related headaches, and as a complementary support alongside care for chronic pain.
How it works
Sensors placed on the body measure a physiological signal and display it back to the person, typically as a number, sound, or visual cue. The therapist guides the person through relaxation and self-regulation techniques while watching how the feedback signal responds, building the person's ability to recognise and influence their own response over time.
Who may benefit
Adults working with an SFCT practitioner on managing stress, tension, or a related goal, as a complementary approach alongside any other care they're receiving.
What it may help with
Stress and tension management; headaches; as complementary support alongside care for chronic pain. Individual results vary considerably.
Important considerations
Biofeedback is generally considered safe, but is not suitable for everyone — people with certain heart-rhythm conditions or skin conditions should discuss this with SFCT and their own treating clinician first. It is offered as a complementary approach alongside — never as a replacement for — medical or psychiatric care, and should never be used as a reason to reduce or stop any prescribed medication without first discussing this with a treating clinician.
